What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of medicine, which specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of joints and muscles of the body, but particularly of the spine and how this may affect the nervous system. Treatment typically involves manipulation and muscle work but can vary depending on the person and condition.

What do Chiropractors Treat?

Many joint and muscular aches and pains with the most common being:-

  • Low back and leg pain

  • Neck and arm pain

  • Joint pains:- shoulder, knee, elbow

  • Trapped nerves

  • Headaches and Facial pain

  • Sports and Whiplash injuries

The Initial Consultation.

A thorough history is taken about the complaint and relevant past health history, along with an appropriate examination of the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints). If necessary, X-rays and other tests may be ordered; if these are not necessary then treatment may be offered.

Treatment.

Would be tailored to the condition and person but would normally be comprised of joint manipulation, muscle work and home exercises and advice.

Joint manipulation is a manual non-painful technique, which is applied to joints where a restriction is felt. This restriction can lead to pain, inflammation and muscle spasm; the manipulation is performed to increase the mobility in the problem joint. There may be an audible click at the time of manipulation.

Muscle work is done to balance and reduce muscle spasm around the problem area. There are a number of techniques which may be combined or performed individually. Trigger point therapy and soft tissue work may be performed by the practitioner. Home exercises of stretching and strengthening may also be suggested to help recovery and aid in preventing recurrences. Ergonomic and postural advice may also be provided as appropriate.
