HOT STONE THERAPY MASSAGE
Evidence of hot stone massage dates back to before written history, in
fact to over 3000 years. Ancient civilisations believed that hot stones were
beneficial for cleansing the body, relaxing the heart, grounding for the soul
and soothing the mind.
The treatment originates in ancient India and China. The traditions and healing
rituals in which the stones were used included laying the stones in patterns
on the body, carrying or wearing stones for health and protection and using
the stones in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Hot stone therapy massage combines the benefits of Hydrotherapy and "Thermalism"
or "Thermotherapy" (the use of heat application) to create a deep,
relaxing and healing treatment. The stones are generally made from volcanic
rock. Using the heat of the stones to warm the skin allows the skin to absorb
moisturising and therapeutic oils, while at the same time preparing the musculature
of the body for deeper work.
The benefits of this therapy are improved blood flow to surrounding tissues
aiding repair to damaged tissues/muscles, increased lymphatic flow, which
in turn aids the body to flush out toxins, eases stress and anxiety, improves
muscular tension/tight and stiff muscles.
It is generally accepted that one stroke of a heated Basalt stone is equivalent
to five strokes of the therapist's hand, which makes this therapy excellent
for working on the deeper muscle layers.
Hot stone therapy massage is not only good for injuries, but it is also a
fantastic pampering therapy.
